Blue Menu Items Review Part 2

March 11, 2013 by Suzie the Foodie 3 Comments

President’s Choice Granola Boost with Fibre – Apple Cinnamon comes in a 325 g bag for $2.99.
On yogurt, it is pretty good. They market it as being very high in fiber with 8 g of fibre per 55 g serving. The two main sources of fiber are whole grain rolled oats and whole grain wheat flakes.
My issue is that on its own, the taste of coconut oil is very strong… again! I wish they would use a less flavourful oil. I like the dried apples pieces and cinnamon but do not like how they combine with the coconut oil.
Granola takes a while to make and although I adore my homemade granola, this store-bought one is not a bad substitute. I like that they sweetened it with brown sugar, making this granola high in iron as well.
I just wish they held back on the coconut! As a result, I can only give this three and a half out of five wooden spoons.
Coconut Water From Concentrate

I had never had coconut water before ever, let alone PC’s Coconut Water From Concentrate. There was only one way to test it….

I will be really impressed if anyone gets my “Omen” reference!

Yes, live on video. Only way to get my honest reaction and opinion. I start off by testing a competitor’s coconut water for comparison and then tied PC’s. Good god! Turns out, I hate coconut water. Oily, slick and does not get really cold… Blech! So, this is one product I end up just not being able to review.

I did think the PC brand was better than the one that came in a can, much less sweet but ugh! No thanks. Especially not for $3.99 per litre. Good for them for being right on trend though! Coconut water is a great hydrator and is high in potassium. Health nuts will love it! Not me though… shiver….

Whole Grain Brown Rice with Lentils and Quinoa Blend

In my unboxing video you can tell on the video I am not super happy with having to microwave PC’s Whole Grain Brown Rice with Lentils and Quinoa Blend to eat it. In the package to boot! My awesome friend Kenora recommended I put it in a ceramic container and cover it with paper towel instead. It only takes 90 seconds to heat up so… I did it.
Well I was shocked! It was pretty darn good. These are all pretty tough ingredients to cook and they all take quite a bit of time. I started to think that if I had this in my pantry, we would actually eat healthier side dishes on a regular basis, especially since one package is only $1.79. Despite the dried spices they added, it is not super flavourful but Reg and I ate it! In fact I easily hid it in pizza and quesadillas.
Totally impressed. I was a complete skeptic. I give this product four and a half out of five wooden spoons. I still can not believe it!
100% Vegetable & Fruit Blend Pomegranate Blueberry

I was a little wary of the 100% Vegetable & Fruit Blend Pomegranate Blueberry because I do not like the combo of those two fruits together.

Yup, still don’t! There is something about it that tastes medicine-y to me and unpleasant. That said, you really can not taste the carrot and cucumbers juices, the tomato paste… They did a great job hiding those flavours while not adding sugar or artificial sweeteners. In 1 cup there are only 60 calories which is a lot less than most juices which are usually around 100 calories!
One bottle costs $2.99 which is pretty competitive and also comes in Tangerine Pineapple and Strawberry Banana, both of which I think I will like more than this one so I will give them a shot.

Flavour aside, I am impressed with this product (although I won’t be adding it to smoothies) and give it four out of five wooden spoons, for those who like blueberry and pomegranate together.

So completes another round of Blue Menu Reviews! If you missed Part 1, you can find it here. Let me know if you tried something I didn’t! Or if you disagree. I would love to hear your opinions on the products too.

I’m not a fan of coconut generally. I certainly don’t like coconut water. But yet I like coconut rice. I don’t know how it’s made — is it prepared with coconut water? Perhaps you know, Suzie.

And I must say that I like your new Alphabits header, LOL!

Kenora, you were hugely helpful, thank you! And I hope you like the snacks.

Debra, I think most coconut rice is made with coconut milk. I may use what I have to make it though since I don’t want it to go to waste and I am certainly NOT drinking it.

Yay! Thank you so mentioning my new Alphabits header, took quite a while to go through a box and find the right letters, LOL. 🙂
