Flattened Fork Pendant

Flattened Fork Pendant

Last winter when I saw these cool fork pendants on Etsy, I wanted to try to make one. I had a very specific idea in mind. I envisioned a truffle in a fork, ready to eat. But then I just thought to myself, I’m not strong enough to bend a fork! Fork-get it.

Then one day in the early spring I found a completely flattened fork in the road. No joke. Just one, nothing else. Right near where we had our head-on collision. OK Universe. I’m listening. I have learned it is best not to ignore it.

So I tried and I could roughly bend the tines with my pliers. Hazzah! It was time to make my truffle.

I had made two truffle pendants and donut pendant with eye pins. Then I made one on its own with no eye pin that I could use with the fork and put them in the oven.

Curving the tines up to grasp their fingers into the truffle was not easy. But I did it! I also managed to warm up the handle of the fork and bend it back and forth until it snapped.

What I could not do, however, was curve the neck over to turn it into a pendant. It sat in my crafts room for months, abandoned. Then, I asked Reg if he could close it. He did it easily and in seconds. My hero! And… oh so frustrating. I wish I could have done it all myself but it is cool we could collaborate.

There is something about the pendant that says to me strength, survival and capturing the sweetness of life while you can. It is bittersweet that the fork came from the most violent corner of my life but in another way, it is kind of liberating. I wear this pendant with pride that I have survived so much since we moved here and love that I am now wholeheartedly embracing my life as a dedicated foodie. And crazy crafter!
