President’s Choice Nanaimo Bar Baking Mix

President's Choice Nanaimo Bar Baking Mix

PC Nanaimo Bar Baking Mix is a seasonal baking mix that is available only for a limited time. It is made in a peanut-free facility and is $4.99 (+500 pts) a box.

Also, I don’t know how they did it but their PC Butter Flavour Canola Oil Cooking Spray really does smell like butter and so far works great for baking. It is $2.99 a can. I used it to spray my 8 x 8″ square pan which I then lined with parchment paper.

Hmmm… You still need to provide your own egg, 2-3 tbsp of milk and 6 tbsp of butter. Butter is super expensive so I factored the additional expense into my product review.

This is what comes inside the box: a mix for the bottom, the creamy layer and chocolate chips for the melted chocolate layer on top.

Making the Mix

To make the bottom layer you must melt 1/2 cup of butter and mix it into the base mix. Then stir in an egg, press into the prepared pan and bake on middle rack for 7-8 minutes in a 325F preheated oven. You have to let everything cool down completely before going to the next step.

You need to beat the filling mix with 3 tbsp of softened butter and 2 tbsp of milk until moistened, adding 1 tbsp more if needed. Which it was.

Spread evenly over base and smooth the top. Refrigerate for 30 minutes until set.

In a small sauce pan over low heat I melted the chocolate chips with 3 tbsp of remaining butter.

Remember to stir constantly until smooth.

Spread over the base, smooth the top and again refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Wow! Can you say suh-weet?!! Reg and I could only have tiny bites of this BC-based treat. The base layer was coconut-y and chocolate-y, the filling custard-y and the chocolate melt-y-y. Just like it should be.

If you are a fan of Nanaimo Bars but really do not want to make them 100% from scratch this might be a good fit. You will need to have quite a bit of time open in your schedule and must not mind spending around $6 to make them. They would be great for holiday treat-giving.

It is still a lot of work though and time-consuming and not exactly inexpensive. I personally would not make them again because it took so long and they were just too sweet for us but if these sound like a good fit for you, I give these four out of five wooden spoons.

I don’t like coconut so I’ve never been a big fan of Nanaimo Bars. Very un-Canadian of me, I know. But I love butter tarts so hopefully that redeems me.

The coconut in the bars doesn’t really do it for me either Debra but some people love it. Oh yes, butter tarts, yum! You are 100% redeemed.

Me too, I celebrate Halloween every day too. Hope you have a great weekend too!

Wondering if these would freeze well and if anyone has adapted the recipe by making adding mint flavour and green food colouring.

Hm. This is pretty much the same work as making from scratch. And i bet scratch is much tastier! I suppose it is convenient to not have to assemble all the ingredients? I clicked to see if the box would save a lot of work, but it seems not to.

Yes, but finding custard powder would be a pain for some people!

I tried the PC Nanaimo Bars. They were not up to par. The base was too thick, the filling tasted like sugary icing instead of custard and the chocolate topping was too thin. Home made or M&M’s are way better. I would pass on this version of the Nanaimo Bar.

I agree, it was like eating sugar. Horrible mix. the filling is to be custard not icing sugar. I would like a refund.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this! We would have been lost without you, because I foolishly put the box in the wood stove forgetting the directions were on the back!!!!! Thank heavens for people like you.
