The fruits of summer

September 25, 2009 by Suzie the Foodie 5 Comments

Local Strawberries

I bought these strawberries during the height of strawberry season. They are from a local Nova Scotia farm and were phenomenal in my chocolate crepes. Nowadays, I buy the regular strawberries and they have little flavour and go bad too fast. This is the fruit of summer I will miss the most.
Now that fall is here and winter is approaching, less and less fresh from the farm foods will be available. We will be spending more time in the frozen food section picking up fruit in a bag. Fresh produce if available will become less and less financially feasible and saved only for those special occasions. For example, every Valentine’s Day I do buy fresh raspberries if they are in the market for my husband for a raspberry fool. Raspberries are his favourite thing in the world.
What fruits of summer will you miss the most? What will you indulge in anyway for those special treats?

I am going to miss fresh fruits. Grapes go way up in price for the winter months, so I never get to have them. I usually don’t get much fresh fruit in winter, but this year I might. Here at NECI they have fresh fruit out for breakfast, and they leave a bowl of apples, oranges, and bananas out all the time. I am lucky!

I would give anything for some dark, firm cherries or ripe, coastal strawberries with long stems.
    Sigh.

What I will miss are the peaches and nectarines. I haven’t frozen peaches for a long time–too much work and fuzz–but I sure enjoy eating them! I’ve frozen over 60 pounds of local blueberries again this summer, for my breakfast yogurt bowl each day through the winter. I also bought some pre-sliced strawberries from the local Rotary Club, and will have those as a special treat now and then. Yum!

Brazil is a weird/lucky country on this. We have fresh fruits all year long. Your strawberries look so yummy I could eat the photo!

Just left you an award on my page, hope you enjoy it!

    Kisses with love from us.
