True North Diner is alongside the Bedford Highway by the Bedford Mall. It is a very convenient location that worked perfectly for Reg’s Mom Lorraine’s 80th birthday party! People from out of town could easily come and people in the city were not that far away to drop in for a bite and a hug.
BUYING MY FIRST CAKE
My responsibility was Lorraine’s birthday cake. Which was kind of overwhelming. See, I hate cake. I always have. Usually too sweet and too dry… I tend to stay far, far away from cake. There were going to be around 20 people so there was no way I could make one myself. I would have to order one.
The bakery recommended a quarter of a slab, the rectangular cakes photographed above. Really? That looked small to me. I agreed and then after speaking to my friend Kelly (professional party-thrower extraordinaire) she seriously suggested I upgrade to the the half slab. There is no such thing as too much cake but too little? It was the right choice. Thanks Kelly!
Now what was it supposed to look like? Huh… This took me a second.
OK, Lorraine loves pink. So make it pink, have lots of roses and throw in some confetti. Fingers crossed…
The cake was beautiful! Absolutely perfect and just like Lorraine’s sensibilities but Reg noticed (thankfully) that it said “Happy 80th Birthday Lorriane” and not Lorraine. The cake decorater, who was mesmerizing to watch, quickly got to work and fixed the cake.
We were on our way! Oh, but, then we realized we had no candles or a lighter. Crap! We stopped by the dollar store. I sat in the car with the cake on my lap and Reg went into the store and saved the day.
True North Diner
We arrived at True North Diner and there was seating reserved just for our party. The staff took the cake and said they would take care of it for us. Thank goodness!
For privacy reasons, I am not sharing photos of our birthday party guests but here is a shot for you to see just how big the diner is! Their site has a very cool virtual tour.
The place is decorated with adorable pieces like this one.
Which really helps make you feel like you have been transported back in time.
At the back is an old jukebox and old fashioned cake display case.
This is an authentic 1956 jukebox that still works. When Lorraine was blowing out her candles, “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to…” was playing which I thought was funny.
Look at those pies! Wow! I love it…
Reg and I both got the cheeseburger but I got the sweet potato fries which were amazing! A thicker cut fry can sometimes be less crisp but these were perfect and tasted delicious. The burger was moist and flavourful. Perfect diner food.
Of course I also had to have a chocolate milkshake! Talk about classic. I prefer my shakes to be thicker but this one was very good and came with the metallic canister with additional shake. What a treat!
With the cake I just had to test their decaf coffee which was delicious. A tad strong but did not give me a migraine so it really was decaf and yummy.
It is a good thing I got half a slab! Otherwise there would not have been enough cake.
Lorraine absolutely loved the design which made me very happy. It really was perfect and we all enjoyed eating the cake. It was quite moist and everyone said the frosting was not-too-sweet. I absolutely agree. Even I liked the cake. Miracles can happen.
I honestly do not think it could have been a more perfect choice for Lorraine’s birthday than this diner.
True North Diner was a comfortable hang-out spot with casual food and seriously, the most patient staff in the whole world. They let us just wander and talk to everyone and gave us all time to catch up and say happy birthday to the birthday girl who had the greatest time.
We even stood outside in the large parking lot talking as the sun went down on a late windy afternoon, hesitant to say good-bye. I want to thank True North Diner for hosting our special family event perfectly. Your food was amazing, the service impeccable and the atmosphere perfect.
We will be back and next time, I am order a piece of one of your amazing pies!
OH, that diner looks AMAZING! I truly wish it was a location convenient to me! Nothing beats a great diner and I’m glad they were so nice to everyone. Please have the pie and tell us about it… like I already haven’t done enough drooling here this morning!!!!
Happy Birthday, Lorraine! You look fabulous, babe!
Hey cool, that is where I went for this!

Never got to try any food but it all looked great!
Best wishes to Lorraine on her 80th, wow what a milestone. The cake looks awesome, I’m a total fan of pink as well, so girly. Good to see you had lots of leftovers, makes for a yummy breakfast next day lol…
Thanks Cathy, sorry you can’t get to the diner! Yes, I will be back for pie and will share the experience with you. She does look fabulous, doesn’t she?
Shelagh, I remember when you filmed that movie there!
Ava, I know, 80, none of us can believe it. I love pink too, truth be told. We gave the cake to Reg’s sister, she has lots of kids. With all the PC treats we have right now, we sure don’t need cake too!
I think when I’m home for the holidays I’ll be visiting this restaurant for sure – thanks for sharing 🙂
The cake looked cute. I’m like you – not a big cake fan (unless it’s carrot cake!). For my birthday I always request pie!
I always drive by this place when i am up in the city…i must go there next time
