I was a little quick to take the picture but there is my Mom coming down the escalator at the Halifax Airport. I am so excited that she is visiting, I really can’t believe she is here.
Having my Mom here means I can finally make seafood for someone other than myself, which I do rarely since I am a social eater and if left on my own I tend to live on sandwiches. I got a large bag of mussels for $4 which fed us both and I made the broth with dark beer!
Here is Mom getting ready to dig in and finish up with my bread. Already we have discussed food for hours and hours and hours. Too much fun! She is helping me expand my food repertoire by asking me to make, get this, steak and kidney pie! OMG, can I do it? So far I have had no luck finding the kidneys and I think I will make this next week after our weekend adventures.
The weather here is crazy cool out with lots of darkness and rain. My Mom is getting to see the crummy weather first-hand unfortunately. I really hope it brightens and gets warmer soon now that everything is so green. Regardless, we are having a blast in the kitchen (she is the supervisor) making classics like homemade pizza and mac & cheese. It is so wonderful to have family here with me to cook and bake for. She even liked my kiwi and green grape granita!
How wonderful! Mom looks so happy! You can just tell your both having a wonderful time already. And look at the foodie treats – wow!
Steak and kidney pie, eh? I was out to dinner the other day with an Irish woman who was telling me how her dad would make it so horribly. I’m sure you’ll ace it!
It’s beautiful how you’re creating a menu around what Mom loves, Suzie. That’s awesome. And it’s also such an interesting way to know someone. Like a food portrait of that person.
I wonder what the menu will be when I come and visit 😉
I love that photo of your Mom on the escalator! Although she is not the physical centre of the picture, the love and delight she’s expressing is the emotional centre and that is crystal clear!
You mom looks so excited coming down the escalator! I am sure it will be wonderful having her around. You might be able to get kidneys from Pete’s Froutique. What about a steak and mushroom pie?
your mum is adorable and the mussels look divine have lots and lots of fun my parents come from Scotland next month! Rebecca
It looks like you’ll both be having a lot of fun! It’s so cool that you’re cooking a bunch of things for your mom. Can’t wait to see that steak and kidney pie! I’ve never actually seen anyone make or eat one before.
Your Mom looks cool!!!
It is great to see you are both enjoying
each other and great food.
