Last Minute Gift Idea: Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

Last Minute Gift Idea: Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

I found this great recipe by America’s Test Kitchen via EatBoutique! and just had to share it with my foodie friends. Especially those who want to make something special as a gift but are running out of time.

What You Will Need

I did 1/3 of the recipe because this makes a lot but will write out the recipe in full for you.

You need: 3 cups skim milk powder, 2 cups icing sugar, 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips (mini chips are preferable), 1 1/2 cups high quality cocoa, 1/4 tsp salt and a food processor.

Making It

Stir all the ingredients in a very big bowl until well combined.

I got out my highest quality cocoa for this recipe. You do not want to skimp since this is really what will make either a high or low quality hot chocolate.

Working in batches, try to grind down the mix and bring it together until the chips break down. Mine had a hard time being broken down so seriously, use mini white chocolate chips if you can.

Get out a pretty mason jar for the hot chocolate and fill ‘er up.

You can top with marshmallows if you like. It does look pretty but it is kind of awkward for making the hot chocolate BTW.

Get some pretty and festive fabric and top the jar and attach with a nice ribbon. Or not. It is up to you.

You should also include some direction on the jar. For a cup of cocoa it will require 1/3 cup of the mix. They can either heat a cup of milk on the stove until steaming and then add it until well dissolved or if they are lazy like me, just add boiling water and stir, stir, stir.

Delicious! Better than store-bought which is what I was looking for. I forgot to pick some hot chocolate up for the winter and really wanted some so I made this to get me through the winter and then realized, damn, this is a great foodie gift idea!

You could make it with Splenda for those who are diabetic or add mint chocolate chips for mint-freaks… Do it up anyway you want, this recipe gives you the bones for making a lovely treat for someone this holiday that you can make out of your pantry.

If you make the original recipe though, you will be gift giving to a lot of people. It makes a ton!

Happy Holidays!

Came back to tell you that after seeing this post, I had to make another cup of hot chocolate. Should be kicking in any minute to help me buzz about the house and get it cleaned.

I love making a cup of hot chocolate and when pouring the water (or pouring the HC while working at Tim Hortons), I’d stick a bag of peppermint tea in there…then remove it after a couple minutes.
Tasted like After 8 chocolates :).

Debra, it really is such a treat, I am totally enjoying it and will probably make it from now on like that.

You were at that. Hey, thanks for the nice words about my eight strand plaited loaf. The picture you saw was my second go, but if you want to see the first time, just click back by one post.

Just tossed pepperoni, cheese and onions rolls in the oven. Movie night here at The Manor.

Hope your having a yummy weekend.
