It has been a while since my bucket list visit to McEwan but I can still remember the fabulousness of Laura Slack‘s chocolates. Again, I was particularly blown away with getting a chance to try her artisan chocolates in the shape of a skull filled with Dulce de Leche! Amazing and lots of fun.
It was hard to choose though. All her chocolates appeared impressive. Her chocolates are hand-painted milk chocolate filled with flavoured ganache.
I still have no ideal how she created that opalescent sheen on many of them or how she made the bright candy-coloured coating on others.
If you did not get a chance to read about my tour of Chef Mark McEwan‘s store, I hope you check it out. It was definitely the highight of my visit to Toronto.
The geek in my had to pick up one smooth hazel chocolate because it reminded me so much of D&D dice. The foodie in me had to get it because I am so in love with hazelnut. These did not disappoint! Absolutely among my favourite but truth be told, it is hard to disappoint me with chocolate and hazelnut.
I did try the Oolong creme. Actually, all the chocolates were cut into thirds and shared between me, Jamie and her husband Justin. This one was extremely creamy and delicious but could I tell you what Oolong tea tastes like from eating one of these? Unfortunately no, not after so long, but we all did enjoy it.
Although I did not partake in purchasing Laura Slack’s Bacon Toffee, I did want to share its existence with you. Maybe next time!
We also tried the bacon caramel and raspberry/Rubus. I am glad we tried the bacon caramel first because it was so different than all the others. It was so… meaty! I mean, that chocolate tasted like a piece of creamy bacon. Which I did not enjoy very much at all. I am glad I finally did try a bacon dessert since they seem to be all the rage but for me, not a pleasant eating experience. Jamie agreed with me but Justin actually liked it.
I think the raspberry/Rubus was my favourite. The raspberry with milk chocolate ganache tasted so fresh, late summery-delicious… I could have popped a whole box of them into my mouth and been very happy.
Laura’s food artwork is amazing. I was so thrilled that the truffles tasted as high quality as the decorative hand-painted exteriors. My only regret is I did not pick up one of everything at McEwan but it gives me another reason to go back one day.
Yeah, like I NEED a reason, LOL.
Gawd, those look good. My mouth is watering!
Those are gorgeous truffles!
They were astounding! I wish I could have shared with everyone.
