Actually this is honey grog but without the grog. A grog is usually an alcoholic beverage (usually containing rum) drunk by sailors with ingredients added to it. My friend Judith was celebration summer with it and I was completely intrigued.
I made just enough for me but here is her recipe and it is is probably enough for four. In a sauce pan pour four cups of apple juice and add 1/4 cup of honey.
Add 2 tbsp of butter, 1 cinnamon stick, 1 tsp of ground orange peel, 1/4 tsp of nutmeg and the juice of one orange.
Simmer stirring occasionally for five minutes. If using, stir in rum just before serving.
It has been downright chilly, dark and dreary on the east coast and life continues to be hard and crushing. I think maybe next time I make it, I will add the grog to the grog.
This was an astoundingly delicious treat that helped soothe my very sore soul.

mmmmm. definitely needs the “grog” though š I just made a HUGE batch of applesauce here as I bought half a bushel of amazing apples for $7.00 (they were seconds) and had to use them up. Do you have a juicer? Fresh apple juice would make your recipe absolutely incredible!
Thanks again for sharing! I just wish I could be there in person to be a taste-tester! š
You should make this for Reg next time he’s in his pirate costume. Arrgh, bring me grog, wench!
Right now, I totally agree, give me a bottle of rum. What a great deal you got Michelle! I tried juicing apples with a juicer and it was a disaster. It really needs a press but could luck and yes, wish you were here to drink grog with me.
Debra, yes! He was thoroughly impressed that I made this actually and next time he is a pirate, I will make a mighty generous batch of de ol’ grog for him.
It’s already amazing the way you made it, but oh my…I’m thinking some spiced dark rum would be awesome too. May I suggest Lamb’s Black Sheep Spiced Rum? I know you’ll love it, it’s very cinnamon-y and vanilla-ish.
