I am a huge seafood lover. From shellfish to the pan-fried haddock pictured above in a mushroom, shallot and white wine jus… if it comes from the ocean I will probably like it. The problem? I am a clean freak. I do my best to keep my home as clean as I can and nothing bothers me more than my house smelling of fish. As a result, I have been avoiding cooking it because I do not want to be trapped in a fishy house for days and days.
Recently my husband told me about Environmental Air Sponge and said that it was an incredible product. That they had used it at work and it had saved his sensitive nose from being chronically offended. So we bought our own container at the grocery store. It is 100% environmentally safe and non-toxic despite its unappealing look. Unlike most air fresheners, this container absorbs the odours instead of just masking them. Flower-scented fish does not help my dilemma.
So I tested it! First, I made fabulous classic French mussels which filled my house with a seafood restaurant scent for an entire night and day. Then I put out the Air Sponge. In an hour, the smell was gone. Then I made the pan-fried haddock, put out the Air Sponge, went to eat my dinner and by the time I came back, there was no fish smell at all. OK fine, the real test? Salmon! Last night I put out the Air Sponge while cooking my salmon and it completely neutralized the smell even as I was cooking the fish!
As a result? I am going to be getting way more omegas now thanks to the Air Sponge. Seriously, I could not be happier! I am going to keep it sealed in my kitchen and for those moments I really need an odour neutralizer I will pull it out. Oh the freedom! Now my house will always smell good, all the time, no matter what I am cooking up in the kitchen.
I would like to add a note here mentioning that my windows were open while I was testing out this product. I have made fish with the windows open many times and there is still always a fishy smell for days afterwards. That said, if the windows are closed it may take a little longer for the smell to disappear.
This product gets five out of five wooden spoons.
Wow, I never heard of someting like that! I love seafood too, but the smell it leaves is really strong, and hard to get rid of. Lucky you to have found this, I bet lots of people will run to the stores to get one too, lol! Great review, loved it.
Kisses from us.
Thanks for the tip! Who couldn’t use something like this?
That’s awesome! I’ve heard of those but never tried one. Yay to no fishy smell!
Thank you for bringing this to my attention! I’ve worried about what my family will eat when we try to sell this house. I often cook with garlic, and I don’t think a garlic smell in the house helps sell a home (unless the potential buyers are vampire phobic!). I was afraid we’d have to live off of cold cut lunch meat sandwiches.
You’re welcome! I always love sharing products that really work, can not stand wasting money on crap, LOL. Brenda, this might really do the trick for you and your moving situation. Make sure to give it time to work. I cooked with my windows open so that may have hastened the disappearance of the fishy smell. Although I have made fish many times with the windows open and it still lingered for days!
Great review, Suzie. I’m going to look for this here in the US. xoO
Suzie, I can totally back you on this one. We’ve been using these air sponges for years, especially in our cat litter area (it gets pretty stinky with 3 cats), they’re great for when you’re painting and perfect for those closets that house smelly kid shoes as well lol. We can get them at various stores, I usually get mine at Wal Mart.
Another one I use in my kitchen is the basic Febreze candle, it works quite nicely as well. It has “an innovative core which releases odour neutralizers as it burns.” Some may not like it though as it does perfume the air a bit, but they do come in lovely scents, I prefer the cinnamon one.
That is one great looking fish dish by the way. So crispy looking, yum.
This is brilliant! I need one desperately.
Wow! What is IN that thing??
Ava, that is a genius idea, using it for kitty litter! We also use it when our basement smells musty even when we have the dehumidifier going. Sarah, I have no idea! Not very pretty but super effective. I bet it has some of the volcanic charcoal that is such a powerful deodorizer. That’s my guess!
Hello, just wanted to follow up and say that I thought my readers might like this, too, so I mentioned you in my weekly links round-up. Thanks for the inspiration.
