The Foods of Summer: to bake or not to bake?

June 27, 2009 by Suzie the Foodie 8 Comments

Fresh fruit

I ask you, is there anything better than fresh fruit? Oh how I love this aspect of summer, getting to indulge in fruit fresh off the vine.
A part of me wants to start baking all sorts of fruity treats but the other part of me just wants to leave the fruit as-is. Perfectly ripe, not needing anything else at all.
Then I have a slice of my Strawberry Rhubarb Pie and ask myself, are you nuts?! Of course you want to bake!
Temperatures around here are rising and the idea of turning on my oven is becoming less and less appealing. Smoothies and berries in cream with sugar seem to be more appealing as the humidity invades my home.
Blueberries and Cream
What about you? Are you going to bake or are you going to keep it natural? What summer treats are your favourite? As you can see, I have stocked up on blueberries, my absolutely favourite thing in the world. What is your favourite food of summer?

My absolutely favorite Summer fruit(s) actually favorite period! are raspberries and blackberries. I will be attempting my very first Chocolate Raspberry and Blackberry Trifle for work this 4th of July. I will be making my own whipped cream (actually my Mom’s recipe0 amd can’t wait to see how it turns out. I will take pictures!

In the summer, I usually make salads (pasta salads, fruit salads, ect) and anything that easy and I do not have to turn on the oven. Our AC is not working right so it gets like a hotbox i here.

I adore all the Summer beverages and I try to make all sorts. I amplanning my August Wedding that we’ll be having in our yard and I am SO excited about doing all the cooking, including the cake!~

I’m coming to raid your fridge 🙂 LOL It’s already so hot here as well but I can’t avoid baking for too long. I make a rustic tart with whatever fruit is in season & love it. Smoothies are always fun & just popping fresh fruit into your mouth can’t be beat!

Summer is so wonderful because the fruit and vegetables actually comes down in price!

I love having a good BBQ in the summer. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, corn on the cob, and watermelon!

I’ve been having smoothies everyday with all the great frozen fruit we get at the store. We were going to go strawberry picking today but it rained here! After we get some strawberries I plan on making jam with it and also some strawberry cookies. I can’t resist baking, no matter how hot it is.

I have the same dilemma (well, it’s not really a ‘dilemma’). I love fruit as is but also pies and such. Gee, I guess I’ll have to suck it up and enjoy it all 😉
