When our friends Mike and Jen said there was a new Second Cup in Bayers Lake, I could not believe it. Neither could their web site. This spot it so new they are not listed yet!
I adore Second Cup and one thing about the HRM that drives me crazy is there are just not enough cafes. We go to movies at Bayers Lake all the time and as nice as it is to go to the Starbucks in Chapters, it gets very crowded and is not a big comfortable spot to hang out and chat.
You will find the cafe sharing the parking lot of a new Petro Canada gas station on the corner of Chain Lake Drive and Susie Lake Drive. The movie theatre is literally across the street!
When I ordered my hot chocolate with a shot of hazelnut I asked them how long they had been open. Not even two weeks and can you ever tell! It has that wonderful brand-new feeling about it. I really wanted to take a photograph of the baked goods but got into trouble doing so at a Starbucks so I did not want to push it.
Hiding behind a display of Second Cup mugs I did start to take some photographs. It is clear some people have already discovered this cafe’s existence which is great!
Hazelnut hot chocolate and Wi-Fi… What else do you need?
As we were leaving taking photos, I could tell I was getting on the staff’s radar. Restaurants seem to be cool about me taking photos but cafes? Not so much. It is too bad. I just want to share the love and spread the foodie word.
Before we left I wanted to take one photo of the entrance of the cafe but as you can see, yup, people were starting to wonder about me so I asked Mike and Reg if I could take their photograph. So there, you get a sense of the place. Warm lighting, lots of seating including a couple of couches and the place is open until 11 pm! Most cafes in downtown Halifax close at 6 pm on a Saturday which drives me crazy.
We rarely drink. Cafes are our preferred hangouts and to have one that doesn’t have people shopping for books right beside you rocks. We do not have to go downtown or rush. There is lots of space, delicious hot chocolate and adorable baked goods. It is in the perfect location to meet and have a hot beverage and catch up before you go to the movies. Genius!
I must admit. There was a part of me that wanted to keep it a secret so the place does not get swamped and loud when we get together. But everyone reminded me how hard it is for these places to thrive and we want it to stick around forever. So, I am sharing the secret. Damn it.

Hooray for Second Cup close to home. I don’t go to these coffee shops too often anymore, as they can be a bit pricey. When my friends and I used to meet at the Second Cup in the mall I used to order a coffee that had chocolate and orange flavouring in it. It was wickedly good. Now I’m going to have to check to see if they still make it, got a sudden craving for it.

I’m a Second Cup gal myself. Starbucks just can’t compare, IMHO. I usually get hot chocolate too.

You’re so lucky!!!!!! I would do anything, almost, for a Second Cup here in no-man’s land (aka Muskoka).

Wasn’t there a Second Cup out there before? This looks like a new one though.

Love chocolate and orange! Will have to order that next time Ava!
I much prefer Send Cup too Debra. 🙂
Sorry you don’t have one near you Cathy although that area is gorgeous!
Melly, apparently there was one that closed over a year ago in a terrible location. I didn’t even know about it when it was around. This is much better and perfect for movie-goers like us.
