Basic Foodie Tutorial: Cookies in Seven Easy Steps

Chocolate Chip Recipes

In order for me to understand how to go about making something, I like to break it down into basic steps. Once I can see the “bones” of a recipe, I can connect the rest of the baking dots. A new long-winded recipe can get anyone completely lost. Here are my basic steps to baking cookies:

  1. Cream butter and sugar together
  2. Mix in egg and vanilla
  3. In another bowl, mix together dry ingredients
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet
  5. Add “extras” (like chocolate chips)
  6. Put on a cookie sheet in dollops
  7. Bake in a pre-heated oven

THAT’S IT! I swear, this is how most cookies are made. In seven basic steps you will have delicious cookies. OK, I have broken it down for you in words, now I am going to do that in pictures.

I will go more into more detail about cookies later on but wanted to share the basics with you here so for those who are new to the whole baking experience (which is totally OK, I just started baking a few years ago) you can get a sense for the process. I also made these cookies completely low tech (AKA by hand), my mixer named Rebel got the day off.

I liked your clear steps to make cookies. I don’t have a mixer at all. So I mix by hand. I also say be in a good mood when you bake. Twice I was in a grumpy mood when I baked and my cookies tasted funny. I do my best to be in a good space, I swear my cookies vibrate on how I feel.

Now I want chocolate chip cookies. They look soooo good right now! Why does it have to be 90 out today! Hopefully I can get to baking this weekend. I’m keeping my fingers crossed it rains like I heard it was going to.

Cookies are one of the first things I learned how to make. They are so easy, as demonstrated by your awesome pictures. Even when I made mistakes (I make sure to use the correct measuring spoon now, lol) it was always worth the time I put into them.

Thanks Shell! I wanted to demystify baking a little and break cookies down into the basics. I totally agree with you! Mood affects flavours, it’s just amazing and you’re right, better be in a good mood when you bake. So essential.

I’m glad you like the look of my chocolate chip cookies Tori! I know, we got hit with a heat wave out of no where today but it was the only day I had to bake so I’m hiding in the cool basement, how odd is that after such a cold winter?

I am going to see if I can find some no-bake recipes for people who are struggling with the early heat.

That’s what I’m talkin’ about :)Is there a way to make home-made chocolate chips / chunks? Always, wondered…probably have to chase all over for cocoa oil.

Oh, and about the non-cook recipes, my friend was talking about raspberry (chilled) soup the other day. What’s the other really popular cold soup…gazpacho!
