Once again the Tall Ships are coming to Nova Scotia! They will arrive in Halifax July 19-23 and visit outports across the province July 24-29. This year’s exclusive spirits sponsor of the Tall Ships Festival is Captain Morgan.
Wow, Captain Morgan Private Stock is an absolutely impressive rum. From the packaging to its taste, this is what rum aficionado dream of. It is one seriously heavy-duty bottle of fine Peurto Rican rum with mellow Caribbean spices. It is also aged in oak for at least two years and smells a little like vanilla. It is quite complex but extremely dreamy.
Morgan’s Maritimer
This year, local mixologist and rum expert Lorne Caborn, created two Tall Ships Nova Scotia Festival 2012 inspired cocktails using local strawberries. I used my own home-grown strawberries to make Lorne’s drink Morgan’s Maritimer.
I muddled 3-4 washed and hulled strawberries per glass using the handle of a wooden spoon.
I added some of Captain Morgan Private Stock and ice per glass. Look at that caramel colour!
I filled the glass with 3/4 orange juice and finished with lemon lime soda.
This drink was absolutely delicious! Reminded me a little of a Harvey Wallbanger, in a good way. So fresh, bright and delightful, Reg and I enjoyed this drink on a beautiful hot summer’s day. Reg actually had sworn off rum for a long, long time and could not believe how much he enjoyed this.
Mango & Maraschino Cherry Granita
Being me, I had to mix it up a bit. Literally! I made a mango maraschino cherry granita by adding chopped cherries and mango juice to a casserole dish which I put in the freezer. I used a fork every 45 minutes to scrape it as it started to freeze. Soon it turned to flakey flavourful ice.
On its own, fabulous! What was even better? Well I started to get such a hankering for that rum… I think it opened up my inner pirate!
Pirate Mango Chiller
Yup! It sure did. I needed more rum now!
I filled up my glass with the mango granita. Then I filled my glass half with orange juice and the other half with pineapple juice. Of course I drizzled the Captain Morgan Private Stock all over on top. Stirred with my straw…
So delicious! Totally took me to the tropics and my inner pirate was satiated… For now!
I am not a big drinker but this product impressed the hell out of me. I even cooked a Caribbean dinner with it last night by adding rum raisins to the dish. One of the best things I have eaten in a long time. (Yes, will share recipe soon.)
It brought out the pirate in me and is a treasure I will be using in my kitchen (and probably my glasses) all summer long.
I give this product five out of five wooden spoons. I have no idea how it could be better. It truly is perfection in a big and beautiful glass bottle.

The drinks sound amazing! I just LOVE me a dark, spiced rum. It’s the only kind I’ll use.
