Way back in February my family got together to celebrate a belated birthday brunch for me at Melanie’s Bistro at 1870 Danforth Avenue. Almost our entire family clan came out (we missed you Jay!) for some absolutely stunning food and family fun.
I ordered the pecan crusted French toast served with berries and crème Anglaise and a side of extra crispy bacon.
Damn! This may have been the best brunch of my entire life. I thought I was going to need maple syrup. I mean, what is French toast without maple syrup? But that crème Anglaise was perfection and brought everything together. The French toast was perfectly crisp and nutty on the outside and soft on the inside which is how I personally like my French toast.
I was hoping to get there one more time before writing this review so I could do the restaurant justice but found out that the ownership has changed hands as of today! So I may never get to have that French toast again, which is just so wrong and sad. Perhaps the new owners will maintain the same standards and quality but they have big foodie shoes to fill.
I will remain hopeful and if they keep that French toast on the menu, I guarantee I will be back. Not only to indulge in but to compare with the original. BTW, I rarely want to go back to restaurants. I am always interested in trying new things and am rarely nostalgic for something I enjoyed so much, I want to go back for more. That is how much I loved my meal at Melanie’s. It was a five out of five wooden spoons experience for me and my family. So rare.

Let’s hope they keep the same cooks! Change of ownership is usually not a disaster for a good restaurant unless they change cooks and the food goes downhill.

Exactly Debra! If they keep the same cooks there may be hope. New ownership will probably mean new menu so I may never get that French toast again. It will be interesting to see what they will change and what they will keep.

Whoa!! I had no idea that was happening. I wonder what the new ownership will bring. Hopefully more awesome french toast!
Suzie the Foodie says
I hope so too Jamie! And yes, I just happened to see the article. They wished me well on Twitter too which was sweet.
