Halloween Spider Web Snacks

Halloween Spider Web Snacks

Thanks to Pinterest I discovered this fun Halloween foodie idea on Pepper Paints’s blog. It looked pretty simple to make and had great visual impact. I had pretzels and mini peanut butter cups so I thought, why the heck not?!

Wilton sent me all sorts of their candy melts so this was the perfect opportunity to do a little product testing. I wanted the colour orange so I melted some of their yellow candy melts (which melted perfectly in the microwave) and added some of their orange icing. I only use their icing colours if I can, they are so vibrant and strong and do not dilute the icing.

If you do not have the candy melts you can of course use white chocolate and dye it or just regular chocolate. I tend not to have a lot of luck with white chocolate.

I had a bunch of pretzels in a star-like shape on a wire rack over parchment paper. At the center of the pretzels I piped a “glob” to hold the pretzels together.

Then I realized, that was not a good idea. I was originally worried about seepage but forgot that we actually want to keep the streams of icing to stay together. Duh Suzie!

I got rid of the wire rack and went around the perimeter with the icing. To make the center more “spider like” I added a mini peanut butter cup. I dipped two mini chocolate chips into the icing to attach as eyes. Then I added orange sprinkles.

I was so nervous, I didn’t think it would hold together but it did!

I made another one and went to town with the spooky decorative touches.

Then I realized, wow, these things are HUGE! So I snapped some pretzels in half and made easier-to-eat versions using the dark chocolate candy melts. Again worked like a charm. I love that product!

Now remember, I am NOT an aesthetics-driven foodie and have very little ability to make things look the way they are supposed to look. One fun thing about Halloween is it does not really matter. As long as it kind of looks creepy, you’re good.

These were tasty, fun but a tad awkward to eat. For me, a fun foodie Halloween project that I would recommend making. They were not hard to make at all and did not take very long either. Of course Reg thought I had used cheese to make the damn things which of course made sense to me upon reflection but you can make yours any colour you want.

Spidery fun! I thought it was cheese at first too.
