How not to waste a pineapple

Pineapple Syrup

On the show they also use the core but I find it numbs my tongue so I just compost it
Finally pineapples are starting to come down in price. I used to get them for $3 out west but here they are almost always $5, talk about steep! When I buy one I do not want to waste any of it and I learned this little trick from Everyday Food. You put the skins into a saucepan, cover with water, add a cup of sugar and bring to a boil. Boil for five to ten minutes then strain through a coffee filter. Now you have pineapple syrup! My favourite way to use it? In smoothies!

Strawberry Pineapple Mango Smoothie

Oh how I love smoothies! One of my favourite flavour combos is: strawberry, pineapple and banana. You throw some in a blender, add about half a cup of yogurt, a cup of juice (I recommend V8 Strawberry Banana) and a quarter cup of the pineapple syrup.

Syrups are so easy to make. You can make just a basic one with one cup of water, one cup of sugar. Boil for five minutes and that is all there is to it. You can make all kinds of syrup. For lime, at the end of the boiling process throw in some zest and squeeze in some juice. For a fruit syrup let it boil, take off the heat and add some vanilla. The great thing about syrups is they are easily incorporated into just about anything, including smoothies.

Strawberry Pineapple Mango Smoothie

I think it is hysterical we have all these beer classes and they are always filled with pretty drinks like this pink strawberry banana pineapple smoothie! We drink these all the time including weekend mornings with treats like these perogies.
I love finding ways to avoid waste of money and food. I thought making your own pineapple syrup was a very cool idea and hope you think so too.

Alexander Keith is rolling over in his grave right now! It might be best not to show such photos on the internet or you’ll be drummed out of Nova Scotia. Or is that your secret plan?

Hey, that doesn’t sound half bad actually! Yeah, I’m not big into alcohol and REALLY not into beer so I get a kick out of subverting the industry with my smoothies, hehe.

Fantastic idea!! I LOVE pineapples and totally think there is a lot of waste when cutting them up just to get to the pieces to eat – or blend in a smoothie. I might use your recipe for the syrup to add to a cupcake recipe!!

Interesting, are you sure they don’t spray the skins with anything? That would worry me, as they aren’t usually eaten.

Very creative use of the skins, I laughed when you said the core numbs your tongue, we all once ate pineapple slices from the skins, and all ended up with numb lips, kind of irritated and talking funny!

Wow, thanks for the syrup tip! I might actually be motivated to buy a pineapple now because I’ll know what to do with the leftovers 😀
