Just to give you the heads-up… I may not be posting the next couple of days. You see my dark and dreary kitchen is finally getting a makeover. Painters are going to be coming over and and giving me an all-white semi-gloss kitchen. I am totally nervous about it. I love all white kitchens but do worry the semi-gloss may be too much for people. But as you can see, when it comes to food photography, I need all the help I can get with natural sunlight. And soon that window won’t get any light at all once the leaves come out.
Not only that, I will finally have a MATCHING all white kitchen. These cabinets did not get painted and are the original oak. Turns out the original owners of this house went away for the weekend way back when and came back to half their kitchen being white thanks to their kids who unfortunately did a crappy job.
You can’t really tell here but the walls are also very dark which does not help a north-facing kitchen gleam. They are a dark sage and very close to being olive green which is my most hated colour ever. Too close for my comfort and makes me sad.
I will be honest. I almost backed out. It’s a lot of money which always gets me stressed but I do know that kitchens sell houses and right now, this kitchen really needs help and isn’t very sellable. Also, I spend all my free healthy time in there and the colour depresses me, seeing the cheap paint chipped away makes me roll my eyes, nothing matches, the off-white colour never looks super clean…
So it is going to happen and Reg and I will be hiding in the basement with only one computer between us. I might just take a blogging holiday so don’t worry about me if I am gone for a bit OK? I will try and sneak some pictures of the process up here if I can though. I love being a foodie spy!
Well done for making the decision Suzie! That kitchen will be transformed, and you will feel good every time you look at it.
Ah, it sounds like the results will be well worth it. Enjoy your forced blogging “holiday”. (My husband and I could never share a computer! You are brave.)
A kitchen makeover sounds exciting!
Good luck during the process 🙂
The beauty of the deal is painting doesn’t take too long, actually moving everything out and back in will probably take longer. You now have the opportunity to re-organize the things you’ve threatened to do forever LOL !!
Have fun.
Thank you so much Erin! 🙂
Sarah, sharing the computer has been rough! I usually get it during the day but this week will be… interesting!
Thanks Alex, it’s just paint but I am hoping it feels like a real makeover. One day I will also have a stainless steel counter but for now I’ll take a matching shiny white kitchen.
Wayne, it’s true! They think they might be done in a day which would be amazing. I’ve been taking my time over the last few days moving stuff. Thankfully I can leave the stuff on the shelves, it’s just the exterior that is being painted. I will be so happy when this is done and I can spend time in my kitchen again.
Wonderful news! You deserve to have a beautiful kitchen!
How exciting! I’d love to have an all white kitchen too, so clean looking and bright. Remember your upgrading your house and that you are worth the money spent : )
You will love it. I painted ours several years ago (cabinets and walls) and it makes such a difference on one’s psyche, I think. Like you say, you spend a lot of time in there, creative time. You are worth it!
Thank you Debra! Dawn, you do too? I love that bright and clean look. Aw shucks, thank you. It’s hard for me to spend money so I appreciate that. Dianne, I am really it does help with my psyche, exactly. Thank you so much!
OK, I am feeling much better now. 🙂 Less anxious.
Can’t wait to see the end result. So funny, we once painted our kitchen a ghastly green colour, it was actually uncomfortable to be in there, I disliked it so much. Once we repainted with some earthy, spice colours I really wanted to be in the kitchen all the time, it was so calming. It really does make a huge difference. This is something that will make you feel a million times better and will help to keep those creative foodie juices flowing. You’ll be so glad you went ahead with painting, I promise!
Exactly! That is how I felt in my kitchen too Ava and the white is an off white… so blechy! I love green in general but some can be really uncomfortable, as you said. Oh I love earthy spicy colours, nice!
I’m already feeling better! Everything is primed and ready for the big coat of paint tomorrow. The only issue is they said it takes a week to stop being tacky and a month to cure!!! Guess I will be doing some safe cooking and baking for the next little while.
Susie,I’m so happy to hear about the kitchen makeover. Knowing how much time you spend in the kitchen, I hope the changes make it more enjoyable for you. Can’t wait to see all the changes.
