For those of you who have followed my site for a while, you will know that when it comes to coffee makers I appear to be cursed. Mostly recently I tried to buy a second-hand coffee maker for Bargain or Bust and it ended up being…
A total BUST! Including leaking coffee all over my kitchen counter freaking me out. Yeah, I was not happy.
And this all happened right around the time I was supposed to be trying Affresh for coffee makers for an article, which was just published BTW! Kind of hard to clean a coffee maker without owning a working coffee maker.
Reg came with me to London Drugs to pick up this KitchenAid Coffee Maker. It was on sale for $75. It is normally for sale for around $100 online.
I cleaned it with Affresh first before brewing coffee.
It was a very simple system but I do find it weird I have to hit the mode button four times before hitting brew.
This sucker gets crazy-hot! I mean it. Look at all that condensation!
In fact when I lift up the top, the condensation always leaks out the bottom so it either makes a bit of a mess or goes into the coffee.
This coffee maker gets so hot, it steams all the time. As a result, the coffee concentrates as it sits so we actually unplug it to prevent it from getting too strong.
When we pour the last of the coffee, we also have to make sure to keep our hand away from the corner of the handle because you can burn yourself from the steam.
So why on earth would I give it four and a half wooden spoons? We have had this coffee maker for four months and it is STILL working. I can not say that for almost all the other coffee makers I have bought.
Normally I would ding it a complete wooden spoon for safety issues but one day we realized that the coffee carafe wasn’t completely underneath the spout. We thought for sure there would be a huge mess but no. No coffee came out of the dripping mechanism because the carafe was not underneath it correctly. Now that is a safety feature I support! I am done cleaning coffee off countertops.
This is not the perfect coffee maker but for under $100 I am happy with it. I just want a coffee maker that work damn it!
Also…
I really do hope you will swing by the KitchenAid blog to check out my article on Affresh and see the recipe for Coffee Fudge I created!
After investing money in this coffee maker I want to make sure that it KEEPS working which is why I clean it with Affresh regularly. I love that it is odourless (unlike vinegar) and so easy to use. A little time consuming but hey, if it keeps my coffee maker working, I have no complaints.
