Lay’s Do Us a Flavour Chip Hunt

Do Us a Flavour Chip Hunt

I admit it. I am seriously late to this foodie game. I tried though. I wanted to try all four finalists’ flavours from Lay’s Do Us a Flavour Contest:

  • Creamy Garlic Caesar
  • Grilled Cheese & Ketchup
  • Maple Moose
  • Perogy Platter

The Canadian who comes up with the most voted-for flavour will have their chips become Lay’s next new product. It is genius! People out of curiosity and the desire to participate (like me) will go pick up four bags of chips they normally would never buy and go vote on their site.

I asked for people’s help on Facebook where to go to find them because they sure were not at my Superstore. My dear friend Gabrielle suggested going to a smaller store and I finally found the Maple Moose chips! I ended up going to six different locations and they were all gone, damn it!

I promised my foodie friends I would do a live taste test and product review of these controversial chips in a video. Most people hated these chips although my sister Shannon liked them so of course, I was completely curious about what my reaction would be.

Overall, I really do not see why people hated these chips. To me, they basically tasted like BBQ chips. I got the sweetness and the smokiness but the maple? The moose? Nope. Yes, they tasted fake but come on, they are chips! As I said in the video, the only thing real about chips are the potatoes!

Are these a real winner? I would say they are pretty good. If they were around, I would eat them. Would I go out and buy them again? Probably not.

So that is my 2 cents on the subject. I really wish I could tell you more about all the other flavour contenders but the company has confirmed they are no longer sending them out. Such a bummer!

I think the contest is a smart marketing idea and love that it is so inclusive to Canadians. I would love to hear the backstories on the flavour choices and learn more. Oh well, at least I get to try the winning flavour when it comes out!

They are also smart in “closing” the competition and removing the flavors from the shelves. This increases thoughts about them but in the end, I bet they do what they did States side and bring them all back as “they just couldn’t have just one out there.”

Novelty flavors are hard to gain a real footing as they can’t be there to be there. They have to taste good and as you said, you wouldn’t go out and buy them again (unless it’s as a novelty and you wanted someone else to try them).

It was great to hear your voice as now I will always hear it when I read your posts, not unlike anytime I see an image of Morgan Freeman with text on it (http://imgur.com/mfTYY)).

It’s true Gerald, novelty flavours are quite smart and get a lot of people interested. Thank you! I am honoured to be put in the same category as Morgan Freeman when it comes to my voice in my posts, LOL. That is awesome! So glad you enjoyed the video!

Well, I have tried all four flavours and in my humble opinion, the only one that is at all tasty is Creamy Garlic Caesar. And it just tastes like the already-existing flavour of sour cream and onion, frankly, so what’s the point? Maple Moose is disgusting. Bleccchhh! And I was SO disappointed in Perogy Platter — very dull and boring. (It was entered by an Edmonton guy). I am not impressed with this contest at all.

A lot of people felt the way you did Debra about Maple Moose. I really didn’t find it much different than regular BBQ chips. Makes me wonder if there was something off when it comes to the recipe and distributing. I wondered if the Caesar would be a lot like sour cream and onion. Oh no! Boring Perogy Platter? That sucks. I heard the Grilled Cheese and Ketchup was terrible. I feel bad for the people who came up with the names because it’s really not their fault if the product doesn’t live up to them.

Why are they no longer selling the other kinds?

I think they’re just not replenishing the stock Danielle and the last ones to run out are the Maple Moose. I keep hearing people being able to find them though but not me!
