Yesterday was my mom’s birthday and I really wanted to honour her by going out and feasting. Which I knew was going to be a challenge because my health has been struggling but I went for it. I invited my friend Kris to join me for lunch at The Cannibal Café located at 1818 Commercial Drive. Above you can see her “Bacon Bad” with a side of fries.
I wonder why the place calls itself a café when it it feels way more like a diner?
It is very long and thin with a long bar for people to watch games on the TV that was above our heads. But then again, we did not end up eating people so perhaps it is all tongue-in-cheek.
I ordered the Belle Provence, a burger topped with Montreal smoked meat, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese… It was delicious and something my mom would have loved but we would have both agreed there should have been more sauerkraut.
The one thing I have been craving lately is milkshakes and The Cannibal Café did not disappoint. It was huge, thick and delicious. An absolute treat with great company.
This place has lots of character and good food. Extra thumbs up for gluten-free bun options. I give it four out of five wooden spoons.

Oooooo, groan, “bacon bad” — what a pun! Glad you enjoyed a meal with a friend and honoured your Mom at the same time.

Thank you Debra! It was a blast, a very cool hangout for burger and shake lovers on The Drive.
