It is so funny how inspiration comes knocking on our kitchen door. I had this old-ish and small-ish piece of puff pastry left that I had no idea what to do with. Then I remembered Ina Garten’s recipe for Cinnamon Elephant Ears. I realized, I can do something like that!
We still have not received “official” word when we are moving (super long story) but I know it is coming. As a result, I have been raiding my deep freeze trying to use up everything in there since it probably is not coming with us.
I know, this piece of puff pastry does not look appetizing but I am cheap and did not want to throw it into the compost. It was left over from some other treat I had made at one time and I was going to use it, damn it!
So what to do? Slather it with Nutella! The pastry broke in some place so I had to put it together but no big deal.
I rolled up along the length of both sides of the pastry until they met in the middle.
I cut into thin slices and put on parchment paper. This is when I realized they were not going to end up looking like elephant ears at all! So tiny…
I was good with mouse ears though. They were super cute!
I baked them in a 450F oven for 6 minutes. They got scorched on the bottom but it did not really matter. These were so good Reg and I ate them all up in a heartbeat. So fast, I did not have a chance to take one of those “pretty pictures” I love to take.
No worries. I can see them smiling in the photo above, mugging for the camera before they were devoured.
Anyone else have ideas about how to use leftover pieces of puff pastry so they do not go to waste?! I would love to hear them!
