The Product
President’s Choice Bacon & Maple Barbecue Sauce seemed like a no-brainer to me. Who would not like the flavours of bacon and maple together?
That is right. REAL bacon and maple syrup. Totally Canadian and delicious, right?
Product Testing
I tried them on the PC Our Great Canadian Thick & Juicy Beef Burgers and did not enjoy the burger. In fact when I made the burgers a second time without this sauce I liked them so much more. Weird!
I love having meat and veggies on sticks so I grilled up some chicken and slathered it with the sauce.
Same with the veggies.
I thought I would end up with the PERFECT grilled dinner (one of my favourite things to make) but it was just OK. Why? TOO SWEET! I do not like sweet with meat especially if there is little heat. (A total fluke of foodie poetry there.)
I could not taste the bacon at all which is such a shame. Some serious smokiness would have helped balance the flavours big time. When I looked at what was inside the sauce I was not surprised to discover the first ingredient listed is sugar. Maple is close to the end of the ingredients and bacon is in the middle. Hence the overwhelming sweetness…
Now Reg really liked it. He ate his dinner happily enjoying each bite as I ate mine… slowly and with disappointment, damn it.
Foodie Conclusion
If you are at all sensitive about sweetness with your savoury barbecue sauce either stay away from President’s Choice Bacon & Maple Barbecue Sauce or add some hot sauce to make it spicy. Otherwise you will be disappointed like I was. If you just love barbecue and like sweet sauces you will probably LOVE this product.
For me? I give it two and a half out of five wooden spoons. If you like it sweet, you will probably give it four out of five.
What a bummer. I really wanted to love this sauce but it is a cloyingly sweet “meh” for me.

I’m not the world’s biggest fan of maple flavour. I know that makes me a traitor to Canada but I can’t help it.
Suzie the Foodie says
Oh no!!! Yes, that is quite blasphemous to not like maple. Well, there appears to be very little in this barbecue sauce so you’re probably OK.
Cliff the Cook says
Hi Suzi.
I think your problem may be the foods you combined this sauce with. I believe you would enjoy it much more with chicken or pork. I just used this product in making a batch of homemade bbq beans and they came out great!
