Please note this post was quite a few years ago and according to the comments I am getting, clearly the quality of this product has gone downhill!
It is my turn to apologize to President’s Choice! It has taken me too long to get to the final product of the latest mystery box delivery. Time-sensitive posts took over and BTW, this product review is completely inspired by Reg since this is his type of product. (I am not a fan of fish cakes.)
As you know, I have tried making Reg fish cakes in the past and finally came up with a recipe he liked. Still, I would be thrilled to find an economical fish cake product for him so I can have a night off in the kitchen.
The Shopping
PC Melt in the Middle Sustainably Sourced Cod Fish Cakes can be found in the frozen fish section of your Superstore next to the Salmon and Smoked Haddock Fish Cakes.
The Product
When Reg first saw these in the store he was shocked that two fish cakes could cost $5.99 when he used to get a giant bag of them for just over $10!
Reg also is not a fan of either lemon OR dill with fish so this was going to be interesting.
Inside The Box
The first thing I noticed when I opened the package was, holy cow, those fish cakes are HUGE!
If you put two of Reg’s old fish cakes on top of each other, that would come close to the height of these fish cakes.
I put them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and cooked them in the oven.
Foodie Results
Reg really loved how crunchy the outside of the fish cakes are…
In comparison to the soft inside. He did not find the fill or lemon too strong so overall, he really liked these fish cakes.
“Are they worth $6 for just two?”
He said yes, they were! I was shocked. Clearly these are elevated fish cakes and so large that only two actually fed Reg enough food for dinner. I was thrilled! I will definitely be buying these again in the future to give me a night off and to make Reg a happy foodie camper.
Reg gives this product four out of five wooden spoons.

I’m kinda shocked that Reg liked them too, after reading for so long how he’s VERY particular about fish cakes.

I know! I was CONVINCED he wouldn’t like them and think they were a waste of money, especially when I saw the lemon and dill, thought there was no way!

I’m with you girls and shocked that Reg liked them. Very cool.

I know, right? I was totally surprised!

The batch we had tasted horrible.
My wife couldn’t spit them out quick enough.
Suzie the Foodie says
Oh no Chris! I am so sorry to hear that. Reg has had them several times and still likes them. Perhaps you got a bad batch? Which is awful!

Tried the melt in your mouth cod cakes today.
my husband loves fish. I am not a huge fish fanatic but decided to try these.
we did not like them. They went in the garbage. We couldn’t really taste fish. There was no real taste except for the creamy dill sauce which was meh. Not the best PC product in our opinions.
Suzie the Foodie says
Oh I am so sorry that these were awful! I reviewed them four years ago so perhaps something has changed. You can always let them know, their site invites feedback and sometimes you can even get money back for their products. So sorry this was a big disappointment!
Not a Foodie says
I should have known better, over the years, I have found many PC frozen products to be barely edible. And, we’re not even picky foodies.
We just now tried the PC Cod Fish Cakes. They were AWFUL! The centre lemon dill sauce is completely tasteless and runny, the cod is so processed, the texture is pasty, in no way does it resemble flakes of real cod, and the coating is thick & crunchy, like ground up corn flakes. Not recommended.
Suzie the Foodie says
Wow, you are the second person to recently comment on this! I did this post quite a few years ago so clearly the quality has fallen since so I added a comment at the top of the post to warn people. I am so sorry you had such a bad experience. What a shame.

These are garbage and close to, if not, being falsely advertised. I’m in the process of checking that out with consumer affairs. There’s a few flakes of fish. Lots of breading and perhaps potato. While the product says it is salmon and haddock, the few fish flakes you get are actually salmon and cod according to the ingredient list. The haddock component’s is haddock’ salt, whatever that is.
Purchase fish separately and make your own fish cakes. These are not worth the money.
