Yes, right after I announced I would no longer be doing cookbook reviews I am going to share this recipe from The Looneyspoons Collection (click here for amazon.ca) and sing this cookbook’s praises. Stay with me. It will make sense.
The Recipe
Whisk together 2 tbsp of salt-reduced soy sauce, 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice, 2 tbsp liquid honey, 2 tbsp ketchup, 2 tbsp minced green onions, 1 tbsp grated ginger root, 2 tsp grated orange zest and 1 tsp of minced garlic.
Marinade chicken, turning several times to coat for at least four hours. Overnight if possible. (That is the hard part for me, remembering to do this in advance.)
Preheat grill to a medium setting. Place chicken on lightly oiled grill rack. You can brush chicken with extra marinade as long as you boil it first to kill any bacteria. (I didn’t know that people did that anymore with marinades but this technique is in the book more than once.)
Each time I have made this chicken I have changed the recipe. I have never added the orange zest (we rarely have oranges) and this time I doubled the sauce because I love sauce! I need more sauce…
I did the same thing with Dilly Beloved: baked chicken breasts with maple, mustard, lemon and dill. I changed the recipe to suit what I had. In that case, I used 2 tsp of dried dill instead of 2 tbsp of fresh. I also used regular Dijon mustard instead of grainy. Reg hates dill but loved this dinner. How do these ladies do that?! So impressive!
A new foodie friend just recommended making a seafood version of their Obi Wonton Kenobi soup and I have no doubt it would be amazing and yes, I am going to try it.
Janet & Greta have created a cookbook that I turn to regularly. For new cooks and bakers you will love it because their recipes are clear, simple, healthy and delicious. For more “seasoned” foodies like me who get fried brains mid-week and flustered as to what to make, I turn to them for guidance. We have yet to be disappointed by any of their recipes which is saying a lot.
If you do not already have The Looneyspoons Collection, buy it. They put their entire lives, humour and love of food into this cookbook. I don’t think I can live without it now.
One of my last cookbook reviews and this book gets five out of five wooden spoons. Well done Janet & Greta!
Update via Facebook: Thank you very much Suzie! We may have given you recipes and inspiration over the years, but you have give us so much support and so many smiles when we read your blog posts 🙂 You are the best! J&G

I love Janet and Greta, I still have the original Looneyspoons book on my shelf (pages are falling out) right alongside with this amazing version. They’ve accomplished so much over the years, love their humour, attitude and of course their recipes. Every recipe I’ve made from the book has been an absolute hit here, so I highly recommend the book as well. Have you dared tried their version of Pad Thai yet? We really liked it.
BTW, I also love the fact that they gave you a shout out in the back of their cookbook, what an honour that must be! I was so dang proud to see your name there I had to show all my family and friends 🙂
