A month ago I had a blender meltdown and called on your help. I could no longer handle strangling my husband’s ancient blender and shaking it to get it to work. Many of you stepped forward with fantastic suggestions. As much as I would love to invest in a Vitamix blender, my budget would not allow it. Many of the blenders recommended to me that I could afford I could not find available to me. It was an incredibly frustrating experience. Thankfully my Food Network buddy Ava and my dear friend Michelle both sent me links for Salton’s Lo-Profile Blender Model: BL-1042 being sold at Costco. I bought it for $119 (everything included) and it was at my front door in less than a week. Since then I have used it to make soups and smoothies.
When I first looked at the blades, I thought one of them had snapped off. From the top angel, it is hard to see that one of the blades effectively slides down along the bottom to scrape up food and bring it back to the top. Thankfully I did not panic, examined it and saw that it was just very different than our blender’s blades and a heck of a lot smarter!
This blender seems to have a magnetic plug. It is an easy-to-break-away plug so that if something snags on the cord, your blender will not go tumbling with it. As great an idea as this is, many times the cord fell out of the blender at the slightest nudge. Still, I would rather have to re-plug it than have an accident.
The “lo-profile” element does come in handy in my kitchen. Now I can easily slide it in and out of my kitchen cubbie with no problem or awkwardness. As well, this constructions also means that spillage would never get over all the buttons because they are all the side of the blender. Smart! The pitcher is heavy glass and is dishwasher safe. Overall, the quality of all the components is very impressive.
This design also gives it an outer space aesthetic that I will admit that I love. Yes, I am a bit of a geek that way. When Wendy wrote on my Facebook Page that it looked like it was from Buck Rogers I just knew I had to have it!
I was impressed with this blender the first time I used it. Powerful and effective, it blows my old blender away. Yes, there have been a few little frozen pieces of fruit here and there that have shown up in my smoothie but in general this blender works great. One lone blueberry in my smoothie is no big deal.
I like that it comes from a Canadian company but my one complaint is their customer service. There is no phone number listed on their web site for contacting them. I had to email them and it has been over a week and they have yet to answer my questions. It is for that reason I can only give this product four out of five wooden spoons. Customer service is very important to me and in that department, Salton failed. Costco on the other hand did amazing, once again. The blender was at my door in less than a week! Buying it from them was hassle-free.
I will be very happy to let go of our old blender but I am grateful we had it all these years. I had no idea that replacing it was going to be such a challenge. One I hope I will not have to go through again for a long, long time.
Let the blending begin!
You know, I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad electronic purchase from Costco. My coffeemaker, blender, chocolate fountain, hairdryer, space heaters as well as many many other items have all come from there. Their buyers do their research well!
I’m so glad that “Buck Rogers” blender is working out for you, and yes, may it be your true and loyal kitchen friend for many years to come. I raise a glass of smoothie in honour of the new addition to your kitchen.
