On our first night in Summerside we went to Starlite Diner. We had to find some place local to eat and according to this sign they were closing very soon! Turns out most of the island shuts down soon after Labour Day.
Our friend Mike had mentioned the restaurant to us, knowing how much we love authentic diners. I looked up reviews of Starlite so I was prepared for the food to take a while and to not have my hopes up too high.
I was there for the 50s feel. I love diners so much that I was willing to risk a crappy meal.
Authentic black and white tiled floors, bench seating, nostalgia hanging from the walls… yes, this is why I was here.
I could tell my husband was wary of eating here but I insisted and the poor guy ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and got a grilled cheese sandwich instead! The waitress had apparently lost her notebook and ordered the wrong meal. By the time I could tell her about the mistake my husband had finished off the sandwich, destroying the evidence, but she took our word for it, LOL. In the end it was no big deal and my hamburger with the works was pretty good:
I also got a chocolate milkshake which tasted pretty authentic with extra vanilla added to the mix. Our first day in PEI was a cheap foodie day which was fine by me.
On our way out we stopped by the ice cream section and got a cone.
Mine on the right is a peewee size chocolate cone, my husband got the regular cone which would have been way too big for me. We sat outside the diner amongst the technicolour picnic tables and giant ice cream cones eating our ice cream, planning our adventures for the next few days.
Starlite Diner is fun but next time I would skip the dinner and just get the ice cream. I give this restaurant three out of five wooden spoons.

What a cute place! So colourful outside and with so many details inside. I would have risked a not so good meal too. The photo ops would be worth it. š

Susie, your post makes me long for a visit to PEI. We spent quite a few summer vacations there when the kids were young. It was the best place to wind down for a working mom. You really felt cut off from the world and all the stress.
Thanks again for sharing,
Anna

Just love those places and I usually try the hamburger because you know they are home made. Great pictures. I guess PEI is rolling up for the winter; that is what I heard. Grat picture.
Hope the hurricane wasn’t in your corner.
