The Restaurant
The final super special foodie event (next to the wedding of course) was going to Five restaurant, located in Hotel Shattuck Plaza, for brunch.
We had quite a lot of people coming and this seemed to be the only venue that could handle that much of our family at once. In fact, most places in Berkeley did not allow for reservations on the weekend but Five did and accommodated our large party.
It was more than a little chichi but that did not stop a lot of us from taking out our cameras and capturing the beauty of the location and the food.
The Food
I do not think I have ever come across a place that has such divided online reviews. People either gave it a 1 or a 5 and either loved or hated the food/service. There is no doubt that choosing this place was going to be a big risk but did you see that chandelier?!
I had to try for myself of course so I ordered Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon, my favourite brunch delicacy of all time. They were a little stingy with the Hollandaise but very generous with the salmon and spinach. We all thoroughly enjoyed the food and had no complaints at all.
The Customer Service
The customer service was impeccable, completely the opposite to what I had read online. Our coffee cups were constantly being refreshed and our server remembered that I only drank decaf so I could relax and be present while the carafe appeared over my shoulder.
The Decor
I have never been to a place quite like Five before with its tropical black and white Damask design and stunning chandeliers. It was a wildly special dining experience.
The Reviews
Perhaps the opulence of the spot created unrealistic expectations for those online reviewers? I could find no fault with Five in any way.
MY Foodie Conclusion
Five gives you the space to eat and speak over food without having to shout. It is classy and the customer service was impeccable. We all loved our meal and my dad in particular was grateful to be able to really get a chance to sit and catch up in this beautiful location. That is huge praise!
I give this foodie dining experience five out of five wooden spoons. This place made you feel special and taken care of. A one of a kind experience and the perfect place to say our family good-byes.
