When I heard that Sabra Canada was doing their first cross-Canada Truck Tour, delighting residents of the country’s largest cities, I really wanted to go when they visited Halifax.
The Truck in Halifax
The problem is? I don’t live in Halifax. Getting downtown that day was not possible, damn it! But they sent me some photos which was very kind. I am so disappointed I missed out on getting a tour of the truck which is “…branded with colourful images of the ingredients that make up Sabra’s dips. The truck passes out free samples to everyone who visits the truck, you can then customize your hummus with your favourite Sabra topping like Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Garlic, Roasted Pine Nut and Supremely Spicy.”
The Product
I may have missed a visit to the truck downtown but Sabra Canada kindly sent me coupons so I could try the hummus after all! I had to go to Sobeys (Superstore did not have any but their own) to find the hummus and each container was $4.99.
Their classic hummus is truly classic. Creamy, great texture and fabulous traditional hummus flavour… this was a winner for sure! I do have issues about the label saying “gluten free” since I have never known a hummus recipe to have gluten in it, LOL. That just seems silly to me, especially for the classic hummus, but I understand why they do it. Great marketing technique.
My favourite was definitely the Roasted Pine Nut Hummus. The additional Italian flavours (which I know some will find blasphemous) actually flavoured the hummus beautifully and the added texture of the pine nuts in the creamy dip was more than welcome. I was shocked. I really thought this was a weird combination but no, it worked.
I knew I was taking a risk by picking up their Supremely Spicy version, made with hot red chilli peppers, but hey, that is why I do this. I am a risk taker!
Is it as spicy as it looks? Hell yeah! Double hell yeah! Reg actually dove into it before me and he seemed OK at first. Then his eyeballs got very pronounced and he started doing “heaving” breathing. He looked at me and shook his head, knowing I am very sensitive to heat but of course, I had to try it. I was not so generous with the dip and took a bite.
And waited.
And then… it hit. It was hot. Very hot! Sneaky hot… waiting at the back of my throat like that urging me to have another bite and get a double whammy of spice.
Umm… No thanks! I ended up scooping out that Hellish centre and finished the rest of the hummus quite happily.
That said, if you like heat, you will love this! I am just ridiculously sensitive to it. I think it is a fantastic idea to add a fiery punch to hummus for those who can take the heat.
Foodie Conclusion
Overall I was very happy with the quality of the product and would say they are worth the $4.99 for sure. I love the effort they made to drive across Canada and share it with everyone. Quite the noble foodie quest.
I give this product four out of five wooden spoons.

I’ve never had Sabra hummus but then again, I don’t shop at Sobey’s. Well, at least not yet — Sobey’s just bought out Safeway which is the regular grocery store for My Rare One and me so I’m sure we’ll be shopping at Sobey’s soon! I’ll pick up a container of classic hummus when I do — I don’t like any variations on the traditional flavour that I’ve ever tried.

We love Sabra hummus – our favorite is the pine nut one you liked, Suzie! FYI – the super hot spicy one is toned down some if you mix all the stuff together before diving in!
I didn’t know they were going to be in Halifax!!

Debra, same here. That’s part of why I love what I do, I get introduced to new items and let people know about them, it rocks! I had no idea that Sobeys bought Safeway, woah, that’s major foodie news. Like Loblaw buying Shoppers. The classic hummus is great, you will love it.
Janet, you too?! Cool! Oh man, I probably should have mixed it up eh? LOL.
