The Product
Skinny Pop Popcorn is not the typical Suzie The Foodie product. It just sounds too healthy to be interesting! When I see the words “Simple ingredients. Delicious flavour.” I have to admit, I want to yawn.
The Inspiration
My dear friend Zorica was raving about their Sea Salt & Pepper Popped Popcorn on Facebook. Zorica is one of my favourite people so when Reg and I were grocery shopping the other day, I picked up a bag for $2.99.
The Product
The only ingredients in this bag of popcorn are: popcorn, sunflower oil, sea salt and black pepper. It is gluten-free, GMO-free, dairy-free… You name it, it does not have it.
You could clearly see the flecks of black pepper all over the popcorn.
I have to admit, when I first tried it, I was bored. It tasted like healthy air-popped popcorn with some salt and pepper added to it. But then… That is kind of what it is being marketed to be. No false advertising here.
Reg thought it had lots of flavour at first but then was like, wow, OK, that is it? Funny, the next time I had it (perhaps because my expectations were so low) I liked it a little more.
Foodie Conclusion
There is very little sunflower oil going on here so a lot of the black pepper came off quite easily. That said, is this a “tasty, guilt-free snack”? I am not sure. Considering there are 10 grams of fat in just 3 3/4 cup of popcorn… That is much higher than I would have expected although most of it is unsaturated fat. It is about half the amount of fat as Smartfood’s White Cheddar but personally, I would rather have more flavour and calories and just choose to eat less.
If you are a health-oriented foodie you will probably like this product. Zorica does not even like black pepper and still loved it. Still, if you have an air popper, popcorn, sunflower oil, salt and pepper you could make this for pennies. If you are a busy successful health-oriented woman like Zorica, for you, I give this product three out of five wooden spoons. Me? It is a pass.

Great pictures, Suzie. I’m hoping to make my way back toward corn.
