The Great Wall Restaurant was a total unknown entity to me. I don’t live in Halifax and get downtown very rarely so when I had the opportunity to check it out with Emily and Alissa on one of our D&D afternoons (the guys game and we hit the town), I said yes please!
The restaurant is located at 1649 Bedford Row, right off Sackville Street. It was early in the day and we were hoping we could get some dim sum. Unfortunately they only serve it on Sundays.
But there was lots for us to choose from.
We ordered some pot stickers that came with these two crazy-hot sauces. I tried them both but preferred the pot stickers on their own, they were very tasty and, well, the sauces were just too hot for me.
We ordered the lemon chicken which none of us realized was deep fried! And… so delicious. I am now having to re-assess my dislike of lemon in savoury dishes. Look at that chicken glisten!
We (meaning mostly me) were happy to discover we all like seafood! So of course we had to get the Seafood Double Happiness. Those scallops were perfectly cooked! All the seafood was. It was seafood happiness for me.
We also got a chow mien dish, one of the only dishes that came with noodles we knew for sure would be soft.
We were there eating everything for quite some time. Everything tasted great, I have no real complaints. In fact the staff were so friendly and helpful, continuously making sure we had a nice hot pot of tea to go with our meal. Oh and the hugest bowl of rice for our meal I have ever seen!
By the time we left residents of downtown lazily walked in to treat themselves to some Chinese cuisine. If I lived downtown, this would definitely a local hangout I would come to for some sweet and sour treats. I give this dining out experience four out of five wooden spoons.
Emily, Alissa and I had a lovely relaxed sunny afternoon on a cold day in downtown Halifax, eating our fill of Chinese food and catching up while the guys fought werewolves back at the apartment. But we were not done! We still had to meet up with Sarah and get some dessert.
Post coming soon…

It’s too bad they didn’t have dim sum! I love a good dim sum selection. Nothing like that around here, alas, alas.

I love dim sum too and haven’t had it since Vancouver!
It was a cool place Debra.
Dominique, yes, pot stickers are the way to go if you miss the dim sum. Oh, ginger beef sounds good! I almost got their orange beef so maybe next time it will be al beef, LOL.

Real chow mein is hard to find around here it’s true! It was the Cantonese Chow Mein, #10. Enjoy!
