For my blog’s third anniversary I treated myself to the Wonder Plunger Measuring Cup via ThinkGeek’s web site. I had always envied Alton Brown using his plunger style measuring cup and I wanted to have one too! This one was only $5.99 so I went for it.

This product works great with those wet and sticky ingredients that are a pain in the butt to put into measuring cups like shortening, peanut butter, softened butter…
This cup can measure up to 1 cup and you set the measurement by twisting the base to the desired measurement. Then you fill ‘er up and plunge the ingredient out into your bowl.
The best part? You are left with minimal mess! All you have to do is clean the rim and the base of the plunger. No more overwhelming ooey gooey mess.
I LOVE that! Now, do I use it all the time for all my measuring like Alton Brown? No, just for the sticky ingredients. I want this baby to last.
Criticism?
Measuring 1 cup of an ingredient is a little precarious. It just holds it and is a little tricky to work worth, pushing the tool to the edge. My advice? Also pick up the Two Cup Adjustable Measuring Cup for the big jobs.
I have used this product for just about every sticky mess I can think of. From yogurt, mayonnaise, shortening, butter, peanut butter to…
… Nutella, my favourite. I think the best unexpected surprise working with this product is discovering how many pockets of air were in it after I thought I had measured it properly. As a result I added more and pushed out the air to make 100% certain I have the correct amount of the ingredient. Impressive!
Although ThinkGeek’s site says that this product is dishwasher safe, the packaging says to wash it by hand because a dishwasher could impact the technology that makes this product work. I am more than happy to do the minimal washing by hand to keep this product in tiptop condition since it has now become an indispensable tool in my kitchen.
I give this product four and a half out of five wooden spoons.

I have one of those (though it is a different brand). I love it! It’s so nice for measuring out honey and other sticky stuff.

Yes, I have a 2-cup adjustable measuring cup too. I have many recipes I prepare that use honey and it’s great for it in addition to ketchup, mayo, etc.

Pampered Chef makes a 1 and 2 cup version. I got mine about 10 years ago, and it wasn’t new then. I do like it alot. The difference is that Pampered Chef is clear so you can measure liquids inside the inside cup. There are fluid and solid measurements on it.
