Trip to the Bulk Barn and Foodie Goodies!

Trip to the Bulk Barn and Foodie Goodies!

I FINALLY got to the Bulk Barn! Ever since I moved out west I have been yearning to go to the Bulk Barn. The problem? It does not exist in Vancouver! That is right. You have to drive out to New Westminster Smartcentre to get there.

During the “replace the coffee carafe” dilemma we found ourselves out in New West and I knew it was the perfect time to go shopping!

What Did I Buy?

I have to say one of the BEST things about having a cell phone and being on Instagram is being able to take photographs inside places without getting your head chewed off. Bulk Barn has not always been the most camera-friendly place but here I managed to take a snapshot of what I bought at the counter.

I also got Swedish liquorice, black peppercorns…

I have been wanting to make my own hazelnut syrups forever! And here is LorAnn’s Hazelnut Bakery Emulsion, apparently better than extract because the flavour will not evaporate if heated.

Perfect! I made a simple syrup, whisked it in and added to a large pitcher of decaf coffee.

Now I can make my iced coffee for going to the clay studio with hazelnut flavour all from scratch.

That was the fun purchase but the one I really REALLY needed was buttermilk powder. Bulk Barn is the only place that I know of that sells it.

Why do I need it? So I can fortify ranch dressing! I have been searching for that perfect ranch dressing recipe forever and it still eludes me. What I do instead of dissolve some buttermilk powder in a bit of lemon juice and rice wine vinegar.

Then I add a few dollops of sour cream and sometimes some dill.

Top with lots of freshly cracked black pepper and then squeeze in some store-bought ranch and mix.

Doing so adds a ton of “pow”-style flavour to the dressing which knocks my foodie socks off. BTW, black olives really do not work in this salad. Eat and learn!

I may not get to the Bulk Barn very often but when I do, it is always such a joy. I love being overwhelmed with all the different scents, the bright colours, the many forms of foodie temptation… Most of all, I love feeling at home. I move a lot and have lived ocean to ocean so shopping consistencies like this one makes this foodie very, very happy.

Another great blog from the genius mind of SUZIE (Wonder Woman)THE FOODIE !!
We visited their P.G. store last year specifically ti get the ingredients for making our own taco spice and came away about $100 lighter with they impulse stuff . Wish there were more accessable outlets in the lower mainland . The Queensborough location is a bit out of the way . I guess I’ll need to build up a Bulk Barn shopping/wish list and go when it’s worthwhile !!

Thank you so much Wayne, you’re awesome! And I know, this is the first time I left spending less than $30 and it was tough. The price of rent here must be too high for the store to be close to the city. Yes, having a list really helps when you can’t get there very often.
