Part 1 of my birthday was pretty epic but I had no idea what was in store for us that night. We are pretty straight edge but I decided to indulge in a drink or two. I wanted Reg to be able to as well so to be safe we took the bus to our celebratory location at 4362 Main Street in Vancouver.
The Location
The Shameful Tiki Room!!! When I was trying to figure out where I wanted to go for my birthday dinner, every place felt so normal and potentially formal. I hate getting all dressed up.
Dinner at a Tiki room? Now that sounded interesting! Something different and fun. Bring it.
The Restaurant
I picked one of the most challenging places to take photos ever. It is so dark in there with warm red lighting. Every inch is covered with tropical touches—I totally loved it. This was our kind of place.
I had read online that you absolutely must make reservations no matter what night of the week because the place is not very large but is very popular.
The Drinks
This place is known for their complicated yet fabulous tropical drinks so there was no way we could not partake. Reg started with The Suffering Bastard, moved onto the Bourbon Special and then went back to the The Suffering Bastard. As you can probably surmise, he loved The Suffering Bastard.
With all the medication I am on I should not drink at all but this was a once-a-year celebration so even I partook in the libations. I started with The Tropical Itch which was excellent (they were out of the back scratcher garnishes) and then had my first Mai Tai, which I loved.
The Special Effects
Every time someone ordered the “Volcano Bowl” drink which is for four people, the fog machine would get going right behind Reg. Every time someone ordered the Mystery Bowl drink (and we were all supposed to yell “MyStErY bOwL!!” in spooky voices. Love it!!!
The Food
Reg ordered a huge plate of chicken nachos for dinner. He said they were excellent.
I wanted the Hawaiian Ribs which came with rice and salad. The sesame dressing on that little salad was perhaps the best I have ever had. I want that recipe! The rice was perfectly cooked and that sauce on top made it delicious. I ordered a full rack of ribs which were very good. They seemed to be cooked in a light sweet soy sauce and were not spicy.
The Entertainment
We were seated close to the stage and I had heard that there might be some form of entertainment. I asked about it and our server said that there would be go go dancers. I suddenly had a bad feeling.
Our friend Vicky arrived and had some food with us and said the lime rickey was excellent. Then, the entertainment started and it was a go go inspired burlesque show.
I looked at Reg and said, “Drink up.”
Totally not my kind of thing for my birthday so we paid for our incredible dinner and drinks and my birthday came to a close.
Thank You
What an incredible birthday! People bought out my Etsy store to help support me and this website (you rock!!!) and I had so many adventures. The Shameful Tiki Room was an incredible way to finish off such a fantastic day.
Thank you all for joining me for my birthday celebration. I am so relieved that my website will continue on strong for another year thanks to all of you generous foodie friends of mine. Best birthday gift ever!!!
