We did it! We have heard about Italian Day on The Drive since the first time we moved to Vancouver back in 2000 but the sound of the crazy crowds kept us away. This year it was a nice day, the event is free so we figured, why not? Let’s go check it out!
Food Trucks
There were a ton of vendors and food trucks along Commercial and I think this is the shortest line of the day because most trucks had HUGE lines.
Entertainment
There was some Italian being spoken on stage which had lots of people’s attention but since we do not speak Italian…
There were even buskers on the side streets although I can not recall if the song was in Italian. A lot was not Italian but the theme for the day this year is amore so who cares? The more the merrier.
There were fencing demonstrations….
Couples on stilts….
We were really tempted to get some food because everything smelled amazing!
But the people! OMG, so many people. The descriptions of how packed this festival gets are not a lie or over exaggeration and this music venue brought everything to a crushing standstill.
The Food
Did I mention how good everything smelled? This spot in particular smelled of grilled sausages but the lineup!!!
That’s the foodie spirit!
The Regret
Reg had to get to work so our time was very limited. The one place I wanted to try so very badly was Slavic Rolls. They make pastry dessert ribbons on wooden cylinders and then fill them with wondrous things like… Nutella!!!
But the lineup… We just did not have the time damn it! That was tough… Been wanting to try one of those forever.
Conclusion
Have I mentioned I have issues with crowds? I stuck close to Reg and managed to get through halfway down Commercial to the park before we turned around to go home. I am proud of myself! No food this time but next year we will know to give ourselves lots of time so we can get a special treat. Like a Slavic roll filled with Nutella? Yes please!
