So I am back to product reviews my foodie friends and how cool that I get to start with trying My/Mo Mochi compliments of Davidson’s Valu-Mart?!
The Store
I wrote to the store at 985 Woodbine Avenue to let them know I would be happy to review new products that showed up.
The Mochi Bar is located right at the entrance of the store in front of the prepared salads.
When I showed up to pick up my samples I was so focused on the fact I was finally going to try mochi! Real mochi! A Japanese rice cake that I had heard so much about when I lived in Vancouver. This truly was a special new product that Valu-Mart had decided to showcase.
Each frozen dumpling is $1.99 and the containers for them are located right beside the display unit.
Employee Danny helped me by selected one of each flavour.
Flavours available are chocolate, salted caramel, strawberry and vanilla.
Sweet!!! Thanks Danny!!!
WARNING!
So I knew they were frozen when I bought them but they seemed impossible to bite through so I thought it would be OK to put the container in the fridge until the end of a movie when we could all enjoy a little bit together. Doh!!! No!!! Do not put in the fridge! Keep in the freezer.
Back To The Store
I went back to the store and bought more mochi, LOL. Except! I could not get a vanilla one out of the container. At all. I picked it up, banged in a bit… Nope.
So I came home with chocolate, salted caramel and strawberry.
The Taste Test! Finally!
I took photos before I put them in the fridge… I love that you can see how My/Mo Mochi is crimped together and gives you the feeling of a homemade frozen dumpling.
The exterior of the sweet treat is made with sweet rice dough which means this treat is gluten-free. Inside is ice cream! If that appeals to you then this is a treat you will adore. The closest thing I can think of that it reminds me of is an ice cream sandwich but the sandwich part is dough, not cake.
The flavours were excellent, the quality high and the experience absolutely unique and for me, unusual, since it was my first time.
Foodie Conclusion
If you are not OK with doughy texture though, this is not for you at all. But! If you love things that are doughy and all dumpling-like… You will love it and want more! I was worried that because it was made with rice flour that it might be a little grainy but it is not at all. The ice cream is very high quality and absolutely delicious.
And do not forget to either eat right away on your way home from the store or to avoid disappointment keep in the freezer, not fridge, even for a little while.
I think this is an incredibly cool and progressive foodie product to have at Valu-Mart. A gluten-free treat that is unique, fun and delicious!
I give this product four out of five wooden spoons. I would have given this half a spoon higher had it been a little easier for me to actually get out of the container and bring home. I applaud their efforts to have minimal waste and avoid individual packaging but it all came home in a plastic container anyway… If I can not bring the product home, that is a bit of an issue.
That said, it was so much fun to try and enjoy!

I’ve never heard of these before — very cool!

You will want to verify whether the ice cream itself is gluten free before you say that the entire treat is gluten free, Suzie – sometimes the thickeners in ice cream contain gluten. Anyone who needs to avoid it likely already knows this, but I thought you might want to know also. These look great, by the way! I love how you can buy them one at a time. Thank you for doing this taste test!

Sound interesting. I don’t believe there here in North Idaho. But I would be willing to give them a try.
