Welcome to The Gourmet Club

November 4, 2015 by Suzie the Foodie 9 Comments

The Gourmet Club

When I was very young and we lived in Montreal, my mom was part of a gourmet club. She and her friends would put together incredibly elaborate meals for each other and they would talk about it over and over, forever.

The Gourmet Club

An infamous Ridler dinner before I was born!

My mom loved good food. It was important to her. This did not include dessert though. For her, it was all about the dinner.

The Gourmet Club

Mrs. Litt and my brother Jason

In particular, I heard about Mrs. Litt’s candied violets, something I have dreamed about since I was a kid.

The Gourmet Club

I have been feeling so nostalgic lately and really missing my mom that I decided to start my own Gourmet Club. The first recipe? Baking Eggs En Cocotte which just means baked eggs in cream.

Baking Eggs en Cocotte

I added smoked salmon, cream cheese and red onion to mine but you can add whatever flavours you want to yours.

The Gourmet Club

It was fun to include my Hello Kitty Toaster in the video but not so much fun when it burned the toast and set off the fire alarm during the taping!

I hope I did my mom proud. This recipe came from the copy of La Varenne Pratique she got me at the church auction we loved so much.

The Gourmet Club

Today oven-baked eggs in cream… Tomorrow? Who knows! This foodie world is our oyster.

Mom would have absolutely loved your flavour choices here, Suzie!

I think it’s funny that what I remember from those evenings are the long dresses and the glittering jewellery! I’m sure she’d be delighted to know that you are starting a gourmet club of your own.

Thank you Jamie and I hope you’re right! We both loved cream cheese and lox. 🙂 Oh yes, the clothing! I bet it was amazing. I was a little too young to remember it but I bet everyone looked so glamorous. Mrs. Litt in particular, she was always so fabulous. So far it’s a party of one for my club but that’s OK, I want to eat a fabulous life.
