My dad’s wife Julie made this unbelievably decadent breakfast for us one Christmas many years ago and we all fell in love with it. It is like a breakfast lasagna with ham and cheese.
The Recipe
INGREDIENTS
16 slices white bread, crust removed
8 slices ham
8 slices cheese
6 eggs
3 cups milk
½ tsp salt
½ tsp dry mustard
1 tsp Worcestershire
¼ cup onions
¼ cup green peppers (I don’t generally include these)
½ cup butter – melted
Special K
DIRECTIONS
In lasagne dish put a layer of bread, then a layer of ham, a layer of cheese. Repeat.
Mix remaining ingredients except butter and Special K.
Pour over bread, ham and cheese.
Cover and chill overnight.
In the morning sprinkle with special K.
Melt butter and pour over top.
Cover with aluminum foil.
Cook in a 350° oven for 1 hour.
Let stand for 10 minutes.
(Serves 12)
Foodie Warning!
Even Reg loves this treat and when he asked why don’t we eat this more often? I told him, “Because it’s a cholesterol bomb!”
Still… Once a year and OMG! Truly a foodie wonder to behold. Prep it on Christmas Eve, throw it in the oven on Christmas morning an hour later you will have a breakfast of champions.

Looks great! Not quite sure how it’s a major cholesterol bomb though.. 8 slices of cheese and half a cup of melted butter for an entire tray doesn’t seem too bad at all. And we know that eggs are not bad cholesterol now… white bread is not great for you but it doesn’t have any C. hmmm maybe it’s just my german background, but this looks like you could indulge in it at least TWICE a year… 😉

It’s the 1/2 cup of melted butter drizzled on top that did it for me! OK, maybe twice a year, LOL.

I love this breakfast and have been making it ever since that first year. There’s nothing like putting it in the oven and opening presents while the house fills with that yummy scent!
Suzie the Foodie says
So true Jamie! Although Dad and Jason were still asleep when I snuck it into the oven but we had food when they woke up. That explains why we ended up opening gifts so late!

Recipes like that used to be called “wifesavers” since they could be assembled the night before. Now THERE’S a term that has fallen into the sexist dustbin of history, eh?
Suzie the Foodie says
Oh man!!! (Face palm) Although this term shouldn’t surprise me since I have been binge watching Mad Men during the holidays (halfway).
