I wanted to share the real deal when it comes to trying to open up a young Thai coconut.
I was also curious. Was coconut water fresh out of a coconut worth it???!!!
Tutorial
The following is from my video which was hell!!!
A young Thai coconut is going to cost you $4. One woman online said you don’t want to remove the plastic because the white outer flesh has been treated with chemicals. I have no idea if this is true. All I know is I gave up caring about that very quickly.
You want to slice around the top of the nut with your knife.
All the videos said you want to chop the coconut with a big heavy knife at 45 degree angle. Which, when I did it, did absolutely nothing. When hacking away did not accomplish anything I got out my Dremel tool and still, the bloody coconut would not open.
So I kind of lost my shit and just kept hacking the coconut around the top.
Finally, after more than 10 minutes, it did open! And yes, it was filled with fresh coconut water.
Hell I tell you! HELL!!!! But, I persevered and did it.
This is the fresh coconut meat that if you blend with the coconut water will make coconut milk.
Foodie Results
In one coconut there was just 1 cup of coconut water. It tasted a little better than the Thirsty Buddha Coconut Water I tried but was it worth all that effort + $4?! No way!!!
It is true, you can not get fresher coconut water but who cares? That was absolutely ridiculously hard to do.
Foodie Question
Recently in my Thai Cooking Essentials class with Robert Danhi he opened up a mature coconut with just a couple of whacks with a knife. Sigh… Should I try opening this kind of coconut too or just let it go?
Somebody has got to come up with an easier way of opening coconuts!
