Would you believe me if I told you that I have never made short ribs before? Not only that, I made these astounding short ribs for just $2!
That’s right! Reg was working late one night so it was just me for dinner. I took these $2 boneless short ribs priced to clear home with me to make that night. So easy and so damn delicious!
The Ingredients
This recipe will make enough sauce for probably a dozen ribs so plan accordingly!
You will need: 4-12 boneless short ribs, 1/3 cup water, 1/3 cup soy sauce, 1 tsp sesame oil, 2 cloves of minced garlic, 1 tsp chili garlic sauce, 2 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp + a little more hoisin sauce and 1 tbsp chopped green onions.
For the slurry you will also need: 1 tbsp cornstarch and 3 tbsp cold water.
Making the Sauce/Marinade
Whisk together everything but the cornstarch and 3 tbsp of cold water.
Now I happened to have time to marinade my ribs so I took a couple of tbsp of the sauce and let the ribs sit in a plastic bag with the sauce in the fridge until dinner time. If you do not have time, do not worry about it.
The Cooking
I put the ribs on the bottom of the Instant Pot and topped with the remainder of the sauce.
I put it on the meat setting for 35 minutes.
I took the pressure off immediately and opened up the Instant Pot.
I removed the ribs and kept them warm while I finished the sauce.
I changed the setting to sauté. I mixed the cornstarch with the cold water then added it to the sauce and let it thicken. This happens fast!
BTW, if you prefer, you could just reduce the sauce but I wanted to eat NOW!!!
Foodie Results
These were pretty damn good but I decided to add a little “finishing hoisin” to make the flavour pop even more. Then they were quite perfect!
Oh what an absolute treat!!! I served the super tender ribs over rice with green onions for garnish. Such a fast, tasty, easy yet decadent dinner.
When asked what is for dinner my mom used to always say, “Whatever’s on sale!”
You were a genius Mom. An absolute genius.
I love it, whatever’s on sale.
She could cook pretty much anything or would learn how to depending on what she got a deal on, really quite amazing.
Made these for dinner last night and are they good. \only problem was I ended up paying around $8 a pound , pretty steep for less the top cuts, Still enough for a meal for 2 of us and bought enough yo make 2 meals .
Thanks for the recipe Suzie and another Instant Pot lesson .
Wow, yeah, very expensive, I know! Which is why I haven’t had them before. yikes! Did you like it Wayne? I felt the hoisin at the end was important for boosting flavour. Glad I can help and have fun with the Instant Pot!
oh, the hoisin at the end was a definite & needed flavor boost. Tasted the pot sauce just before I added the cornstarch for saltiness and that was Ok but felt it needed some punch but after the addition of around a TBSP of hoisin ( actually all I had left) it was just fine. I will make these again .
