Central HVAC can still perform efficiently in a compact, well-insulated home where most rooms are occupied at the same time. A well-designed duct system with minimal leakage also reduces one of the main efficiency disadvantages associated with central air.

For that reason, comparing estimated annual energy use for properly sized systems is more useful than assuming one technology will always cost less.
