Winslow, do you feel your military training as an army reservist helped you win this part of the contest?
I have been in the army for so long now it is natural for me to break any stressful situation into a mission analysis. My training as a leader definitely came into play when it came to using resources, delegating tasks, leading my team and adapting to the curve balls I was thrown.
Are you glad you stuck to your guns and did not change the name of your winning Jammin’ Jamaican Lobster Bisque recipe?
I am very happy I stuck to my guns! In developing my recipe, naming it and auditioning, I kept in mind the fact that I wanted it to go all the way and would need a good name, a name that people would associate with Jamaica and would describe my product. Even my marketing team thought I made a good choice.
For sensitive foodies like myself, how spicy is your soup? I see that your recipe use scotch bonnets. Should I be nervous about taste testing it?
I will be honest with you, It does have some kick to its flavour but it isn’t overpowering. People that have tried it describe it as a good heat that doesn’t linger too long. My ten year old daughter is not a fan of overly spicy food and she loves it. I think you can handle it.
Suzie Note: You can read my product review here!
In the show you used lobster bouillon to add more lobster flavour to the dish. Did that make up for cutting the lobster in your recipe by a third?
That was my biggest challenge while cooking in the batch up! I had never used lobster bouillon before and I only had a third of the star ingredient. I reinforced the recipe by boiling the lobster bodies longer, using the bouillon and a little bit more coconut milk. That combination was able to bring the lobster flavour to the right level.
It is already popular! My store was completely out of Winslow’s product!
Are you glad you did not add the filler ingredients such as potato to your recipe to make it most cost effective?
When I was developing the recipe I thought about adding some of those filler ingredients. In the end I thought they would be just that, filler, so why do it? Any ingredients I wanted to add should harmonize and add to the flavour not just be a filler. In the end, I went with simple Jamaican ingredients with the hopes of it becoming a President’s Choice® product that everyone can enjoy!
Are you nervous about being in the finale or confident you have THE Recipes to Riches’ winning recipe?
I am not a person to get “nervous” but I am very anxious. I know I am not the only creative person out there and I am sure the next few episodes will reveal some excellent competitors. It will be great however, to muster some support leading up to the finale! People can pick up my President’s Choice® Jammin’ Jamaican Lobster Bisque at their local Loblaw banner store and vote for my recipe online at cbc.ca/recipetoriches from 8:00 a.m. ET on March 26 to 11:59 PM on March 30.
If you are feeling brave, you can try making Winslow’s fabulous spicy recipe yourself!
